Sutent for non-GIST sarcoma – pro

Suten(sunitinib)t is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a type of sarcoma, after disease progression on or intolerance to imatinib mesylate. Sutent is also indicated for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

A Phase II clinical trial for sunitinib (S. George et al) in treating 53 patients with metastatic, locally advanced, or locally recurrent non-GIST sarcomas was presented in ASCO 2009. Sunitinib demonstrated notable evidence of metabolic response in several patients with non-GIST sarcoma. The relevance ofdisease control observed in subtypes with an indolent naturalhistory is unknown, however, the durable disease control observedin DSRCT, solitary fibrous tumor, and giant cell tumor of bonesuggests that future evaluation of sunitinib in these subtypes may be warranted. There are case reports for use in clear cell sarcoma patients.
