Bone metastasis represents the most frequent indication for palliative radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer. About 70% of the patients with bone metastases suffer from pain. The goals of palliative radiotherapy are pain alleviation, recalcification and stabilization of the bone as well as minimizing the risk of femoral fracture or paraplegia. Further disease progression with the expected complications is stopped by radiotherapy of the affected skeletal manifestation and pain relief is generally observed within a few days after the start of radiotherapy.
