Vitamin D is NOT protective of heart disease, but should be monitored in thalassemia – pro

Vit. D deficiency has been linked to various conditions, but the evidence securely connecting it to cardiovascular risk in not decisive and recent literature questions it. The most recent evidence published in JAMA indicates that Vitamin D supplementation is not heart protective. In thalassemia, however, recommendations are to screen for Vitamin D deficiency annually, treat those low in Vitamin D and check levels twice a year in those found deficient.
